Our car pool left bright and early to get the
full experience of commuting into downtown Chicago. 1-1/2 hours after departing the campground,
we arrived at Chicago’s Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower). At 1,451 feet, this is the tallest building in
the western hemisphere. We rode a single
elevator from ground level all the way to the Skydeck on the 103rd
floor at a height of 1,353 feet.
From the Skydeck, we looked down on all the
other skyscrapers in Chicago and saw panoramic views for miles around the
city. Many caravan members stepped out
onto the glass box ledges that extend out from the side of the building. From there you could look straight down all
1,353 feet to the streets directly below.
I am glad to report that no one fell through the glass flooring and all
exited the building using the elevators.
From Willis Tower, we carpooled to Navy Pier and did what we do best; eat lunch. Bubba Gumps served up different dishes of fish and shrimp for all to enjoy.
After lunch, we worked our way along the pier to attend the Cirque Shanghai acrobatic show. The talented performers put on a great show.
We finished our afternoon on Navy Pier with a
ride on the Sea Dog jet boat. Wouldn’t
you figure that a light rain started falling at the beginning of the only
outdoor activity of the day?
Fortunately, lightweight rain ponchos were available for sale at a
nearby shop. The Sea Dog provided a
brief high-speed ride on Lake Michigan and then proceeded slowly up the Chicago
River. A guide provided commentary on
the architecture of many buildings that rise next to the river.
After a full day in Chicago, we drove back to
the campground where our caravan leaders, Bill and JeanAnn, broke out HUGE
hamburgers to be cooked on the grill.
